Conference games were/are always weekend series, so there were no "road swings" where we would hit three of the southern conference teams in one trip. The only time we had multiple opponent trips (for the most part) was Spring Break. One year we traveled to Tulane for a conference series at the start of Spring Break, then stuck around Louisiana for a couple of games at SE Louisiana (I think that was the school). The normal routine for those conference series in Metro Conference was leave Blacksburg on Thursday afternoon and drive roughly halfway (usually 8 hours or so), spend the night at some crappy motel along the interstate (and try not to leave anyone at the Hardees when we stopped for dinner...), then finish the bus ride on Friday. Return trips were brutal because we would leave right after the Sunday finale and usually drive all the way back. Tallahassee and New Orleans sucked, but for whatever reason Memphis always seemed to be the worst.
